Safety of swimmers at beaches in jeopardy?

The safety of swimmers at beaches in the Rangiora district could be put in jeopardy because of the Government s decision to abolish . the student holiday work scheme. The chairman of the Rangiora District Council. Mr T. M. Inch, said yesterday that mid-week beach patrols were manned under the scheme and he feared that the council might not be able to provide patrols to the standard it had in the past.

The council had estimated that beach patrols would cost it $lBOO next summer. “It would cost four to five times this amount if we cannot get patrols under the student holiday work scheme," he said. The council will investigate the situation immediately. The lifeguards are employed through the Canterbury Surf Life-saving

Association. The council pays the association for patrols at Pines Beach. Woodend Beach, and Waikuku Beach.

A suggestion that patrols be employed under the Project Employment Programme was not greeted with much enthusiasm by Mr Inch. He said that lifeguards had to be qualified and meet the Surf Life-saving Assocition's standards.
