Canty favoured
Canterbury should be too strong for its rivals in the South Island table tennis teams’ tournament at the Selwyn Street Hall this week-end.
Teams from eight provinces will be competing-In men’s, women’s, and juniors’ categories on a round-robin basis until tomorrow afternoon.
Maurice Burrowes, the winner of the recent MidCanterbury championship, leads the ’ Canterbury men’s team, which includes Michael Prisk, Kevin Duffy, and John Richards. Michael Hamel,' ranked third in the province last year, was unavailable.
The defending champion, Canterbury, should get its toughest comptition from Otago, which will be led by the promising attacker, Simeon Cairns. Cairns, aged 2'o, was ranked second in Canterbury last year but has since moved to Dunedin. Southland, with Kevin Tapper and Chris Carlaw in the No. 1 and 2 positions respectively, is the strongest of the other challengers. In the women’s event, (the New Zealand champion, Jan Morris, is sure to give the home team the edge in the singles and doubles. Miss Morris will be supported by the in-form Pam Shadbolt, the experienced Thelma May and Miss Monique Van der Aa.
Otago, which features Barbara Fogarty, Christine Fogarty and Helen Bray, has been seeded second.
