Women strike blows for table tennis sides

Three . leading Canterburywomen table tennis plavefs struck the telling blows for their respective teams in the A grade inter-club competition at the Selwyn Street Hall last Wednesday. Jan Morris, the New Zealand women's champion, had three wins for Avonside 11. Pam Shadbolt. the second-ranked Canterbury player, won two.singles for Linwood I and Miss Monique Van der Aa. the province's top junior, did likewise for Riccarton 11. Miss Shadholt turned in the most outstanding performance as she toppled two members of the unbeaten Avonside I team. Bill Scott and Michael Burrowes. Both players are ranked among the top ten men's players in Canterbury.

Despite Miss Shadbolt s efforts. Avonside I comfortably held on to its competition lead with a 9-3 win over Linwood, while in the other matches Avonside II beat Avonside 111. 8-4. University beat Riccarton 11. 7-5. and Linwood II beat Dallington. 9-3. Linwood H's win was its fifth in succession and gives it a firm hold on second place on the points table behind Avonside.

Miss Shadbolt's first win came at the expense of the defensive all-rounder. Scott, who she beat 21-17. 21-17. Scott played his usual, steady game but gave the Linwood woman opportunities when he popped balls up high after misreading the spin returned by Miss Shadbolt's "antiloop" backhand rubber. Miss Shadbolt was quick to tuck these chances away for winners.

Michael Burrowes. the provincial No. 6. was next, and he lost. 14-21. 21.-23. An attacking lefthander. Burrowes took a loose approach to the first set and then played tentatively in the second game. But it was’Miss Shadbolt's sharp pushing that kept the pressure on her opponent, and she took the edge in what became a point-for-point battle with some well-timed driving. To cap off a fine return to form. Miss Shadbolt won a set in her last game against the Canterbury No. 1. Maurice Burrowes.

Miss Van der Aa. aged 17. beat University’s Peter de Boer. 12-21. 21-16. 22-20; and Tonv Sargent. 12-21. 21-16, 21-18. De Boer, a hard-hitting left-hander who was ranked No. 7 in Canterbury last year, could not keep his strong driving going long enough to counter the Riccarton player’s steady blocking and counter-at-

tacking. His comeback from 1721 to 20-20 in the decider was short-lived. Miss Morris added to her tally of singles wins for Avonside II this season by beating al) the Avonside HI players. Her teammate. Martin Kelly, did likewise after another impressive performance. Stephen Adamson and Steven Dixon again found form for Linwood 11. while Michael Hamel had an unexpected loss to Dallington's John Yang. Avonside II 8, Avonside 111 I Singles; J.
