The cones of conifers are very popular as a fuel for the home fire; they are also useful for a variety of decorative purposes. The cone is the conifer's seed-bearing appendage and is made up of numerous scales. The seeds lie exposed on the upper
surface of the scale unlike those of- other flowering plants which are enclosed in an ovary. This is what distinguishes the conifers or gymnosperms ("naked seeded plants”) from all others, the angiosperms.
