Kiwi tour starts in Chch
New Zealand’s, rugby league tour of Australia and Papua New Guinea will effectively begin in Christchurch with the match against South Island, at the Show Grounds next Wednesday evening. The secretary of the New Zealand Rugby League (Mr Ross Williams) confirmed yesterday that the Kiwis would be credited with official appearances for their country in the games against South Island and Auckland at Auckland on June 12.
All 23 tourists will assemble in Christchurch on Monday morning under the managership of Messrs Ces Mountford and Jim Campbell. They will be under tour conditions for the week leading up to their departure for Brisbane from Auckland on June 13. The first match in Australia is against Gold Coast at Southport on June 16, two days after'South Island has its second KB Cup fixture, with the Brisbane representative team at Brisbane.
Although the New Zealand and South sides for the game at the Show Grounds dre not being announced until after the week-end, it is understood that most southern Kiwis will be released to the island XIII. That would serve the dual purposes of having all but a few of the Kiwis in action next Wednesday evening, and allow South to prepare for its Brisbane fixture, when it will again have most, or all, of its seven internationals.
