Betty Adios popular fancy at Ashburton

By

G. K. YULE

Betty Adios, which started racing only on January 23 at the Amberley meeting held at Rangiora Raceway, will be a popular fancy in the Ashburton Licensing Trust Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting tomorrow.

She has but two blemishes on her record which reads four wins and two placings from eight starts. The most recent of these was at Addington Raceway last Saturday when she wore down Robert Henry at the end of a mobile mile in Imin 59.65. A four-year-old mare by Tarport. Coulter from Lumbereen, she is owned and trained at Ashburton by Gerald McCormick and will, as usual, be driven by Robert Cameron, who seems to get the best from her. Betty Adios has drawn favourably at .No. 1 at the barrier and she looks capable of an extremely fast

2400 m at what is the first meeting to be run on the new and splendidly engineered all-weather track, which should provide exciting racing. If conditions approach those which prevailed at trials held on the course last Tuesday, the winner can be expected to go inside 3miri 8s for the distance. Perhaps the hardest for Betty Adios to beat will be Capri, a talented three-year-old filly and the only representative of her age group in the event. Capri was just shaded by Winter Chase at the end of 2600 m at Addington Raceway last Saturday.

She was forced to go to the front in that event and could be harder to beat should she be able to secure cover until

starting the 360 m run home.

Now’s Your Chance could be the pick of an even lot down to start from 10m. He has been a model of consistency and should be well suited by the roomy track. He did well for third to Joan Hanover at Washdyke on May 15 after starting from 20m.

Micawave, Dreamy Rosa, Chantilly Belle and Yankee Hall have sound form close up in their records, while

Sioux shaped like an early winner with a bold run at the Ashburton trials on Tuesday.

Joan Hanover, a winner in moderate time for 2600 m at Washdyke last month, should also be entitled to consideration.

Twinkle, General Link and Stormy form a likely trio in an open field engaged in the second leg, the Nicoll Handicap. Sid, Birthday Lad, Game Captain and Timely Rhythm could all add interest to the finish, while Minstra, the emergency, could be a major threat should scratchings enable her to secure a start.
