Labour ‘on side’ with Govt
PA Wellington The Labour Party was gradually, "coming on side’’ with the Government's plans to proceed with the Clyde high dam. said the Social Credit leader (Mr Beetham) yesterday. He was commenting after a private meeting about the stalled project- between the three Parliamentary parties and officials.
The Minister of Works (Mr Quigley) said after the hourlong conference that he was confident the Government would get its legislation through Parliament.
Members of Parliament who opposed the moves to overcome a High Court decision were engaged in a "long learning process.” said Mr Quigley.
Mr Beetham: "Indications are that the Labour Party is gradually in the process” of coming on side of the Government." He was “not convinced" by the session.
Leading a large Labour contingent to the conference was its spokesman on Works, Mr F. M. Colman, who said that Labour had sought a briefing with officials, and had to report back to the caucus.
Later, he and Labour’s spokesman on Energy. Mr D. F. Caygill. described the briefing as unsatisfactory. There was not enough time for some questions to be either answered satisfactorily or raised, they said.
