Racialism
Sir,—l agree with most of Kevin Spackman’s letter (May 29). Maori seats may be undesirable intellectually, but from the practical point of view they give a direct line to Parliament for an ethnic minority which would otherwise be swamped by a very large pakeha majority. Legislation, such as that prohibiting race to be a criterion in property deals, etc., .helps create an atmosphere of tolerance. Without the Race Relations Concilliator and the Human Rights Commission, to name just two
legislated bodies, the way would be clear for every rabid racist organisation to practise what it preaches. The permanent answer to bigotry, as Kevin Spackman says, “lies 'in increasing the individual’s awareness.’" — Yours, etc., GRAEME YARDLEY. May 29, 1982.
