Sheer Fanatics (above) will be back in action at an allday rock band special at the Hillsborough Tavern on Monday, after a lay-off of three months. The band have been incorporating a new guitarist, Steve Andrews, into the lineup. after the departure of Kit Randall. According to Brent Cain, the band’s bass . guitarist, Sheer Fanatics have been practising five evenings a week to get their material organised.More than half of the songs were original compqsi-
tions, and Brent said he expected people to be surprised by the strong social comment in some of the materia). He mentioned one song, “Tattered Flag,” an anti-war composition, which seems appropriate at the moment because of fighting in the Falkland Islands. The band’s emphasis was still on playing “hard, fast dance music,” without any particular label. Sheer Fanatics hoped to be recording as soon as possible, ensuring that any such move would be of a high standard,
with a release by the end of the year, he said. “We’re quite interested to see what the Christchurch public think of our new songs.” Sheer Fanatics will have two weeks work at the Hillsborough Tavern (including the Monday of Queen’s Birthday Week-end), followed by a week at the Gladstone Tavern. But Dougal Holmes, the band’s vocalist, will go to the Outward Bound course at Anakiwa for three weeks. . The band -were uncertain -
about what places they would play at when Dougal Holmes returned from the Outward Bound course, Brent Cain said. “As long as we can keep playing, that’s the main thing.” The other bands pencilled in to play at the Hillsborough Monday special are Trick Cyclists, Divine Faction, Ikista, and . Hip Singles. • Sheer Fanatics, pictured above, are from left, Dougal Holmes, Brian Young, Steve Andrews, and Brent Cain.
