All-woman squad for sex cases
NZPA London An all-woman police’rape squad started work in Berkshire yesterday after protests about the way detectives handle victims of sex attacks. . . The squad of five women constables — dubbed the Blue Angels — is based at Reading police station, scene, of a real-life police television series which was screened at the start of the; year. During the series there was public anger over the way male detectives interviewed a woman, who alleged she had been raped, the "Standard” has reported. Now the squad of five will handle all indecency cases. Detective Chief Inspector Brian Warren said yesterday:
“There is a desperate need for such a squad. Since we lost the specialist policewomen’s department we have been lacking- in this field and we hope this will . -redress the balance. "Some members of the public may be inhibited in reporting sexual offences because of the embarrassment the details can cause, but if they are relating their exper- . fences to a woman, we feel it will be much easier for them.” , •' .' The five constables, who are all in their 205..wi1l be on call 24 hours a day to deal with all. indecency cases, make inquiries about missing . people, and dealwith of- ., fences relating to children. ■' T
