Employment worries of Waitaki workers
Workers on the Upper Waitaki power development scheme : are concerned that there will be no prospect of jobs for ■ them unless the Lower Waitaki scheme is brought forward. A meeting between Public Service Association delegates. from the project and the Minister of Works and Development (Mr Quigley) had been inconclusive and unproductive, said the association’s Otago regional secretary, Mr I. Campbell. - . “We maintain that to keep a good work-force intact, construction should proceed on the Lower Waitaki even if that means mothballing the
stations and using them later when there is an upturn in the economy,” ' said Mr Campbell, If the power was available, the P.S.A. believed small industry would start up in towns such as Oamaru, which would be hard hit when the Upper Waitaki construction wound down, he said. ’ The P.S.A. executive at Twizel met soon after Mr Quigley’s visit, and will seek a further meeting with him before calling all Twizel P.S.A. members together. About 240 Ministry of Works and Development employees work on the project. t
