Motorists slow to relicense

Christchurch motorists are slow to relicense their cars or renew drivers' licences. A fifth of the 27,500 drivers in Christchurch have renewed their licences, but only 2000 of the 170.000 vehicles in the Canterbury area have been relicensed. The Chief Postmaster, in Christchurch, Mr N. J. Williams, said that it was not getting any easier to get people to relicense their vehicles early. Motorists could attach the new $53.40 burnt-orange relicensing sticker to their windscreens as soon as they

got them, but should leave the old sticker on until July 1. Every vehicle must carry the new licence sticker oh July 1. Mrs Jane Shilling, of the licence-renewal section of the Ministry of Transport, said that people could get their licences renewed at the New Brighton Power Boat Club, in Owles Terrace, or at the Woolston scout den in St John Street. This will save them a trip into town. The offices will be open between 8.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m.
