Linwood clear leader in men’s squash

A round trip 01 ibUkm to Ashburton on Tuesday evening has enabled Linwood to emerge as the clear leader of the men's division one inter-club squash competition for the Blank Trophy.

Linwood extracted eight points from its match with the bottomplaeed Ashburton side, and the former co-leader. Burnside, had a narrow loss to High School Old Boys on a games countback.

For Ashburton, the only success came when Chris Buckland beat his fellow No. 4. Rob Turner, though Brent .McGregor made a fine comeback to win the third and fourth games against Gary Monk, and Malcolm Thomson took the New Zealand under-23 representative. Robbie Burnett, to four games in a hardhitting encounter.

Although three weeks still remain in the Blank Trophy competition it is hard to see past Linwood as the winner.

Burnside, ohly tour points back, will be without its No. 2. Chris Wasley. from now on. Wasley. about to depart on a tour of Europe, went out on a winning note - in fact his sixth victory on end — against John Tolchard (High School Old Boys).

However, the Burnside team was without its captain. Stuart Hargreaves, and although Mark Crosbie had another notable success at No. 1. over Lawrence Skurr. the botiom half did not fare so well.

Vistalite Sumner continued on its upward march, beating Wigram-Lincoln. 3-1. for its third win in a row. Ron Marshall had a five-set win over the Canterbury squad member. Malcolm Mcßain, and John Christensen had a narrow loss to Lyn Sparks.

the only clean sweep was recorded bv Suburbs which

eclipsed Christchurch II after suffering losses in the previous two weeks. At No. 2. Viv Hargreaves triumphed over Graham Foulds for his first win of the season.

Christchurch Football had some great battles with the Christchurch I players, and after Paul Davenport pushed aside Alan Lowe comfortably it seemed the former side needed only to pick up one point in the final encounter.

Football's No. 1. John Oakley, duly managed two points against Rod Hayes, only to find that there had been a miscalculation and four points had actually been needed. Thus. Christchurch I scraped home by 107 points to 105. with the games tied at 8-8.

The situation remains fascinating in the women's division one competition as both Vistalite Sumner and Burnside I had little trouble taking maximum points and remain equal at the top of the table with 52 points each. •

Burnside Is win over Suburbs was the more meritorious as the team lacked its top player. Kathy Hargreaves. Mary Hunt, at No. 2. looked in good form against Vivienne Gunn.

For Vistalite Sumner., Erin Hensley was among the most impressive in her three-game defeat of Christchurch H's Heather Lvon.

Ashburton required a countback on points to shade Christchurch I with the games level on 9-9. Earlier, the Canterbury representative. Lorna Symes (Christchurch I), just back from an overseas holiday, had held a match ball in the third against Ashburton's Czesia Bowan. Wendy Dann (Christchurch 1) played well to.beat Jane Sinclair in a very tight contest, though

the winning point was a rather fortuitous wood Points:— Men. — Linwood 48. Burnside 44. Christchurch Football 36. Suburbs 36. High School Old Boys 32. Sumner 30. Christchurch II 26.
