Governor invites Malaysian P.M.
PA Wellington The Governor-General (Sir David Beattie) has invited the Malaysian Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir bin Mohamed) to visit New Zealand. Sir David was accepting the credentials of Malaysia’s new High Commissioner (Mr
M. M. Sathiah) at Government House. Mr Sathiah said that he hoped that relations between New Zealand and Malaysia would develop more. He hoped, particularly, that more Malaysian students would come to New Zealand, despite recent fee increases and the quota system. About 1300 students came
to New Zealand now, compared with 2000 for many years, he said.. Malaysia also hoped that students would be allowed in courses such as medicine, dentistry, and engineering — which ’ were “closed" to overseas students — especially since New Zealand universities were cutting back their intakes.
Mr Sathiah. aged 41, is a career diplomat, and is married with one young daughter. He is a masters, graduate in law from Cantbridge. He has been deputy chief of his country’s missions to Singapore and Bangkok. He expects to be in Wellington for a three-year term.
