‘Syncrolift’ dry dock for Southland
Southland fishing boats can now benelit from a new type of dry dock -recently opened at Bluff by the Southland Harbour Board. It is known as a syncrolift, or elevator type of dry'dock. With each job the syncrolift' platform is lowered to a depth which allows the vessel to manoeuvre over it. When the vessel is secured in position,' the platform is raised until the vessel and the platform are above the water level Repair work or surveying can then begin on the vessel. The platform which supports the vessel during docking is raised and lowered by electrically controlled hoists with wire rope cables. These hoists are supported by structures made of concrete or steel marine piling. The syncrolift was first used in April to dock one of the board’s
