Running University A women win relays

The University women's A team scooped both the fastest time and the handicap section of the Anglican Block harrier relays at Spencer Park on Saturday.

The team comprised Wendy Molhson. the Tipper twins Lvnne and Debbie. Lee Hunt, and K. Toner, formerly of Australia. It completed the five-lap course of about 25km in 114 minutes 39 seconds, nearly seven minutes faster than Christchurch A which was second, with Toch H A third, another nine minutes back.

New Brighton contributed four runners in the fastest 10 women but the runners were dispersed in three teams, as traditionally done by the club in this relay..' Lynne Tipper took fastest time in 21:46, with Nikki Evans (New Brighton) second in 21:59 and Sarah Harnett (New Brighton) third in 22min.

University was also expected to take fastest time in the men's section but without Dave Burridge it could manage only second, just over two minutes behind Toe H A. However, it had some consolation when Richard Sprott, a good 10.000 metre track runner, took fastest time. Colin Hicks (Toe H). more noted as a marathon runner, surprised by taking second fastest time, ahead of Jeff Elliot (Olympic). In the men's handicap section Avon A team, with 17-year-old Kerry Faas as the anchor man, came through to beat United 2 by nearly half a minute and recorded sixth fastest time, ahead of one of the top clubs. In the children's scratch races the runner of the day was Caroline Barry (Q.E.), who .won the under-12 girl's skm race in a time more than two minutes faster than her nearest rival and faster than the winners in both the under-14 and under-16 grades.
