Zebec could threaten national record

While the New Zealand Two-year-old Trotting Stakes might not provide the most popular betting medium, it should be one of the more interesting races at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club's winter meeting today. The outcome of the event looks quite predictable now that Zigfield has developed problems and will not oppose the national mile record breaker. Zebec. Spartan Prince holds the national record for 2(K)Qm by a two-year-old trotter at 2min 45.35. Zebec could threaten that figure, but he
will need a lot of help from his rivals as he is extremely lazy. Black Barry and Charlotte Wood could be the hardest for Zebec to beat, while the southern challenger, Paragon Lass, a recent qualifier in splendid time, might not be out of her depth, and a bold run is likely from Host Time. There is no race on the programme restricted to three-year-old trotters, but Dragon’s Pride, the best in this age group, will finish his season by contesting the Nigel Craig Handicap. He will be opposed by some useful older and more experienced horses, but should prove more than a match for them.
Aggressive and National Pride will be in demand at least as place chances, while Stormy and Twinkle could be prominent, and Timely Rhythm, a converted pacer, should be considered as an upset chance.
Bloxett was no match for Dragon's Pride on this course on May 7, but he should prove to be too good for the four-year-old trotters in the May Stakes. Duty Officer and Christmas Day could be two of the leading challengers, while Mister Morn, Hall Crockett, Crib Creek and Novander have gone well enough at times to be considered as reasonable place prospects.
