Exocet export blocked
NZPA-Reuter Paris A Peruvian Navy ship left the French Atlantic port of Le Havre a week ago without its scheduled consignment of eight French-made Exocet missiles, harbour officials said today. The Peruvian vessel 110 had been told that the missiles were not ready for “technical reasons,” they said, giving no further explanation. French External Relations and Defence Ministry officials said they had no information on the incident.
But they added that in the light of the arms embargo imposed by France against Argentina because of its conflict with Britain over the Falkland Islands, France was carrying out rigorous checks on the destination of arms shipments leaving the country.
Exocet missiles have been used with devastating effect by Argentina in action off the Falklands to sink the British destroyer Sheffield and a container ship.
