Supremity looks set for success

By

J. J. BOYLE

Supremity’s first win for the season did not look far distant when she battled into second behind Myra May at Riccarton on Wednesday.

The break-through for this Noble Bijou mare from Wingatui might come in the Hororata Winter Mile, first leg of the Hororata Racing Club’s T.A.B.’ double tomorrow. In a busy programme last season Supremity won four races, and some minor placings on or about 1600 m. the distance of tomorrow's race. On her record are sound runs on both firm and rainaffected tracks, and versatility in that regard will be looked to for tomorrow's race.

Form backgrounds of several of Supremity’s rivals present a bewildering mixture. The fact that several of them are coming back to 1600 m from middle distances does not make for any logical analyses and sudden changes in track conditions compound the difficulties. In the line-up against Supremity are Admiral Blair, Ernest and Double Jay, the dividend-payers in last Saturday's 2000 m Amberley Cup: and Sovereign's Will and Firpo. second and a fast-finishing

fourth respectively over 1400 m at Riccarton on Wednesday. Darnley Flight has yet to prove she can run 1600 m as well as 1400 m, even though most of her performances over the shorter trip have been marked by the strength of her finishes. But if she gets dryer footing than she did when she was an expensive failure on Wednesday she could force her way into the finish. Turkabelle. a stablemate of Darnley Flight, is capable

of making her mark fresh up on the present Canterbury circuit in the Gilbeys Handicap second leg of the T.A.B. double. She easily won one of the highweights at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Easter meeting, and an earlier performance on that campaign produced a second, four places ahead of Loose Metal. In the meantime Loose Metal has finished third at 1800 m with a run that makes her a well-regarded contender against Turkabelle and company tomorrow.
