Tyre output affected by strike
Production at the Papanui factory of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, Ltd. is winding down after 20 laboratory and technical workers began an indefinite strike on Monday over a wage claim. The employees, who are members of the Canterbury Rubber Workers' Union, have been on strike intermittently since April 30. As well as research and development work, they make essential process checks on the firm's tyre and tube products. ’ The factory, in Langdons Road, Papanui, could be closed by next week if the strike continued,- said the company's industrial relations manager, Mr G. J: Lea. About 30 production workers had been suspended, and as work slowed, more suspensions would follow.
The laboratory and technical workers are on strike in support of a 25 per cent wage increase. Mr Lea said the company’s offer had been “consistent with national wage trends."
Union comment was not available last evening.
