Scotland to name World Cup squad
NZPA staff correspondent London Scotland will today name its 40 players for the World Cup finals, as the football associations of three of the British competing countries press ahead with their plans for Spain amid growing speculation that the Falkland Islands crisis may cause their withdrawal from the competition. The speculation has been fed in recent days by the postponement by the British Government of two meetings which were designed as preludes to the assault on the World Cup by England, Scotland. and Northern Ireland.
The Republic of Ireland will go ahead with its shortened South American tour, starting, on May 21, even though a number of its top players will be unavailable. Eire withdrew from its scheduled match against Argentina, but will still field a much-weakened side. It was reported from Buenos Aires, yesterday that Argentina disappointed its fans in the central city of Rosario on Wednesday when it beat a lowly Rumania, 1-0, in a soccer World Cup warmup match. The World Cup holders completely dominated the
game but lacked polish and ideas in a scoreless first half. In matches in Britain, the English Football Association Cup finalists, Tottenham, presented Nottingham Forest with its first home win in four months on Wednesday. Peter Davenport scored his first league goal and made the second for Stuart Gray as the jaded cup holders struggled through their sixth match in 12 days. Leeds and Birmingham fought out a 3-3 draw which slightly eased their Division One relegation worries, but West Bromwich dropped into the bottom three by losing, 30, at home to Manchester United.
