Form reversals likely

Special correspondent Wellington Manchu and Langtry, both -inconvenienced by the track conditions on Trentham’s first day, look set to battle out the T. G. Taylor Memorial, first leg of the T.A.B double at the Marton Jockey Club’s meeting at ; Awapuni today. Manchu was a long last in the Lumley Handicap at Trentham and his rider, Jim Cassidy, was suspended for five: days, later reduced to three after an appeal. Langtry ran ninth in the Cuddle Stakes following a quartet of wins.

Both horses are well treated in the handicaps for the Taylor Memorial, a 1600 m event with Langtry, to be ridden by Jim Walker, carrying . 60.5 kg and Manchu, Jim Cassidy has the mount, with 49.5 kg. Another three-year-old that could offer stern opposition is the Awapuni gelding Sovereign’s Ace. Trained by Allan Kaye, and his daughter, Vivienne, Sovereign’s Ace downed Manchu and others over today’s distance at Otaki two starts back. He was another not suited to the track conditions at Trentham on the first day and a fast-firm track today should see him close at the finish.

Sharebroker, returning to 1600 m after racing in middle-distances, could provide the upset. He has any amount of pace and if allowed to make the pace he could take a great deal of pegging back. Il Vento, last year’s winner, Cielle, Fraxy, a veteran but always capable of winning, John Wayne and Kurdistan Agent look the best of the remainder.

Perpetuate had been off the winning list since taking a 2000 m event at the Manawatu Club’s cup meeting in December but his recent racing suggests he could prove the hardest to beat in the McManaway Memorial, second leg of the T.A.B. double. The field for the McManaway is far from strong and Perpetuate’s fifth and sixth in his last two starts suggest winning form is not far away. Race 5 2.15 T.A.B.
