Tax returns slow

Tax returns have been slow to come into the Inland Revenue Department in Canterbury, according to the department's Acting District Commissioner. Mr A. J. Delore.

“We were down more than 50 per cent on last year, at the end of April," he said. However, the returns this week had been 4000 above the figure for the same period last year. The regional returns were down only about 3000 now.

This week had been the best for returns in Canterbury, Mr Delore said. That was a relief, otherwise a rush would have been expected.

Nationally, the department had received about 25 per cent fewer returns than at the same time last year.

The Commissioner of Inland Revenue, Mr J. Simcock, said that a problem could be that employers had not yet distributed IRI2 forms! He appealed to employers to do so, and not wait until they had completed 'P.A.Y.E. reconciliation- statements.

"The department is geared to process the returns now. If they come in with a rush later on, we could have problems with delays in issuing refunds." Mr Stmcock said.
