Unusual double in reach of southern mares

By

J. J. BOYLE

An unusual and rewarding back-to-back family double is within reach of The Twinkle and The Dimple at Trentham tomorrow.

The Dennis brothers’ talented half-sisters will lend strong southern interest to the Wellington Racing Club’s two feature races if Trent ham offers reasonably good footing. The first of them to be tested will be The Twinkle in the $lO,OOO Gloaming Stakes, first leg of the T.A.B. double. About 40 minutes later The Dimple will tilt at the honours in the $22,500 Cuddle Stakes, second leg of the T.A.B. treble.

The Twinkle opened her present North Island campaign disappointingly in the weight-for-age Ormond Memorial at Hastings last week. She defied Ali Robinson’s efforts to settle her to a relaxed gallop on a heavy track, and beat only one of her seven rivals. That was so far out of character for this performer of quality that it can probably be disregarded in the search for top fancies for tomorrow’s 2200 m race. .

The Twinkle goes into this handicap test with 54.5, one kilo more than she carried into second in the Auckland Cup. The Dimple also has 54.5 for her attempt to place the first South Island win on record in the Cuddle Stakes.

She gets relief of 2.5 kg on the weight she carried into third behind Fountaincourt and Dig In in the George Adams Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday week.

The most formidable task facing The Dimple tomorrow, even given the most favourable conditions, could be to match Secrecy for speed at the weights. Secrecy is winner of her last two races, both at 1200 m, and could well succeed with 48kg in a race her half-Sister, Mun Lee, won with 57 last year.
