Hilarious Guest popular fancy for Oaks

By G. K. YULE Hilarious Guest will be a popular fancy to reinstate herself as the top horse of her age when she contests the New Zealand Oaks at Addington Raceway tomorrow evening. Last time out she was a shade unlucky when third to Mai Mai and Mister Wood Chips at the end of a mobile! 2000 m at Addington on April 10. She drifted early in that race and became badly pocketed on the rails, working clear almost in the shadow gof the winning post. Tomorrow will mark the first occasion on which the mobile barrier has been used in the Oaks. This type of dispatch does not particularly suit Hilarious Guest as she is slow to muster early speed. However, once under way she has great reserves of stamina as she showed when she won the New Zealand Derby earlier in the year. Even though there might be reservations about her ability to hold her position early, it is difficult to see her beaten. If Hilarious Guest is to be beaten, the winner could come from among Tact Boyden, Ansett and Capri, but they by no means exhaust the possibilities. There will be support for the northern challenger, Rain Girl, which has had five wins and five placings from her 12 starts this season. Not only that, she has recorded splendid times over all distances and has rated better than 2min 5s for 2700 m from ■ behind the mobile barrier. If she races up to that performance, she should be right in the thick of the finish. Steady Lady and Dab Chick have shown notable form in the south, with _ Steady Lady being most impressive when she was placed at Washdyke earlier in the month in a heat of the D.B. Fillies Series. Russel Garnett, Nightania and Faberge could be the pick of an even field in the second leg of the T.A.B. double; the Life Members' Stakes, which will be run over one mile.
