Opposition to new plant

PA Dunedin The Otago Harbour Board has formally objected to an application by the Southland Harbour Board to the New Zealand Ports Authority for consent to spend more than $500,000 on new plant. The objection has previously been discussed in committee by the board’s works committee, but at yesterday’s board meeting approval was given to the objection.

The Southland board wants to buy mobile cargo-handling equipment to handle its containers. The Otago board is concerned that the new equipment would be used for handling cargo at the expense of the Port Chalmers container port and the rollon terminal. Two new Tasman services from Bluff are already affecting trade figures from Dunedin, the board asserts.
