Two escapers caught
Two men who escaped from the holding cells at the District Court in Christchurch about 11.30 a.m. yesterday were apprehended in Addington about 3 p.m. The fugitives. Peter Joseph Holdem, aged 25, and Glen Douglas Rossiter, aged 17. had been seen by a member of the public in the Neville Street, Addington area, about 2 p.m. after radio broadcasts about them.
The ensuing chase, which lasted more than half an hour, tested the fitness of policemen who had to chase the two men over fences and through gardens, parks, and back yards across Addington. Luckier poliemen kept track of the escapers in cars and tried to head them off.
The pair were finally caught in Selwyn Street and
arrested without incident. They will appear in the District Court this morning charged with escaping from custody. Holdem was in court yesterday to face a charge of attempted rape. Rossiter faces charges of theft, burglary. and car conversion.
