Wool up at Dunedin

PA Dunedin Bidding was keen at yesterday’s Dunedin wool sale, especially for better secondshear and lambs’ wool, and prices were up 7 per cent on the last sale at Napier. In spite of this lift, the prices are still about the same as those ruling at the last Dunedin sale. Recent sales since then had seen prices fall and yesterday’s sale could be the indication of a firming market. The official report said that compared with the Christchurch fine-wool sale on April 16, Merino and Halfbred fleece were unchanged. Compared with the Napier sale on April 23, crossbred fleece was inclined in sellers’ favour, with skirtings- and second-shear up to 5 per cent dearer.

Crossbred first and second lambs’ wool was also up to 5 per cent dearer with oddments to 10 per cent dearer.' The Wool Board bid on 5.4 per cent of the offering and bought 304 bales (1.6 per cent).

The main competition came from Eastern Europe and New Zealand mills, supported by the Far East. The offering was dominated by crossbred second-

shear and lambs’ wool, which made up about 60 per cent of the offering of 19,500 bales. The adjusted weighted average sale price was 259.69 c a kilogram, according to the Wool Board. Based on this, a Government supplementary payment of 23.2 per cent will apply to all wool sold at the sale and all wool sold privately from midnight on Wednesday to midnight last night. The market indicator was 251 c.
