No lotto decision
Parliamentary reporter The Government caucus will not be asked formally to consider the introduction of the gambling numbers game, lotto, to New Zealand for at least another month. The caucus spent some time listening to the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Highet) report on lotto in Australia but made no .decision. Mr Highet visited Australia earlier this month and discussed the game with its supporters and opponents as a prelude to considering its introduction in New Zealand. The Minister of State (Mr Thomson) told reporters
after yesterday’s caucus meeting that the member of Parliament for Helensville, Mr D. M. Jones had retracted a statement, reported yesterday, saying that Mr Highet should resign if. he failed to convince the caucus to introduce lotto. Mr Jones said that lotto was contrary to the Government’s policy and that Highet’s support for the game amounted to a move to change Government policy. Mr Jones said that if the move to have the game introduced failed, Mr Highet should resign. Mr Highet had earlier dismissed Mr Jones’ comments.
