Borg quits for rest of year

NZPA London Bjorn Borg has quit tennis for the rest of the year, the “Daily Mirror’s” New York correpondent said yesterday. The announcement was made by Borg’s American spokesman after he had pulled out of next month’s German championships. The trouble stems from his refusal to accept the grand prix circuit ruling — either play in ten major tournaments or go through qualifying rounds. Borg has already said he

will not play at Wimbledon this year. As the five-times Wimbledon champion, he believes he should be exempt because he does not want to play that much tennis. The German authorities also told him he must play in the preliminary rounds. His spokesman said: “Bjorn has quit because he doesn't want to have to qualify. It’s as simple as that.” He denied that Borg had marriage problems.
