Father dies in football brawl
NZPA Sydney The Victorian Government may ban alcohol being taken into football grounds following the death of a spectator after a brawl. Robert Dickson, aged 27, died five days ago from head injuries he suffered protecting his young son during a brawl at a football match between Fitzroy and Carlton on March 27. He was hit from behind as be bent down to pick up his six-vear-old son. “Why should anyone be allowed to go to the footy, or to the cricket, with an esky (chilly-bin) full of alcohol, get drunk and then start a fight,” his widow, Mrs Kay Dickson, demanded yesterday.
“Just have a small area for the drunks. Cage them in and leave the mums, dads and families in peace. My husband died protecting his child from drunken louts. My husband didn’t even drink himself,” she said. On Wednesday night in Melbourne ministers, police, and football officials met to consider recommendations on alcohol at matches and according to reports yesterday the Victorian Cabinet may shortly ban alcohol being taken into the grounds. Club representatives have expressed themselves in favour of curbing the amount of alcohol drunk during matches.
