Hagley Oval to be improved

A total of $lO,OOO in grants and interest-free loans has been allocated by the New Zealand Cricket Foundation to improve the playing and practice conditions at Hagley Oval. Mr John Airey, the chairman of the Hagley Park Grounds Committee — a body comprising representatives of the four cricket clubs based at the oval and Hospital Corner — said yesterday that the foundation had provided a grant of $5OOO

and a loan of an equal amount. The finance would be used to purchase and instal a fully automatic watering system which would service six pitches and the practice blocks. The project had been estimated to cost $12,000 and was to be completed in time for the start of next season. “We have had our problems upgrading the pitches on the oval. A lack of finance has long been a burden for us. The present means of

watering the ground with hoses is very costly in terms of labour, and is quite inefficient,” Mr Airey said. It was intended to reintroduce the old No. 2 pitch, primarily for Sunday, twilight and other fixtures so that some of the Saturday competition pitches may be rested, he said. Other work has been underway at Hagley Oval for some time, with the assistance of the Department of Labour’s student work scheme.
