Hammer falls on Chalmers block

Mr Hek Hemoto delivers the first blows of the demolition hammer yesterday to the brickwork of the old Chalmers block at Christchurch Hospital. The building is being demolished to make way for stage 111 of the hospital redevelopment. In 1915, Miss Jean Chalmers, of Ashburton, offered as a memorial to her uncles, John and Peter Chalmers, of Ashburton, to give to the North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board up to £BOOO to build and equip at Christchurch Hospital suitable accommor dation for chronic cases.

The sum offered by Miss Chalmers, with a Government subsidy of 24 shillings in the pound, was sufficient to build and equip the proposed block and the board gladly accepted the offer.

The foundation stone was laid by Miss Chalmers on February 23, 1916, and the Chalmers wards were opened in 1917. The three-storey building. contained three main, wards and several small rooms.
