All-women Parliament?
PA . Wellington Parliament would become an all-women institution by 1994 on current trends, said one of the four new women members of Parliament yes-. terday.’ . With the number of women in Parliament doubling in the last election from four to eight (six Labour and two National), Ms Fran Wilde (Lab.) Wellington Central), told her mainly male colleagues: “By my calculations, if- the current trend continues, there will be 96 women members here in 12 years time.”
To laughter .and applause from- a full public gallery there to hear her maiden speech, Ms Wilde, acknowledged that an all-female Parliament was unlikely. . But “any person who is tempted to smile or look horrified at that suggestion should look a little more objectively than usual at the reasons why he finds the prospect of an all-women Parliament so amusing, while the usual all-men grouping has been considered normal and acceptable,” she said. ■
