Swimmers named for two-week camp

Twenty-three swimmers, including the 12 nominated for the Brisbane Commonwealth Games, have been named for a two-week training camp in Hamilton next month.

The camp was originally intended for the Games nominees, but has been extended to include' 11 additional swimmers who are all tantalisingly close to Games qualifying times.

The swimmers will arrive in Hamilton on May 8 and train at the Centennial Pool at Te Rapa until May 23. The day before the swimmers disperse there will be time trials, and the national selectors are hopeful that a few more swimmers will reach the sought-after qualifying times.

The swimmers chosen are: Men: Brett Austin, Michael Davidson, Mark Kalaugher, Paul Kingsman, Anthony Mosse, Murray Parker, Richard Wells (Auckland); Grant Forbes, Grant Gillard, Andrew O’Donoghue, Kara Taumaunu (Canterbury); Barry Salisbury (Wellington). Women: Pamela Croad

(Manawatu); Urusula Cross, Susan Kirfcup, Sarah Mahon (Auckland); Carmel Clarke (Hawkes Bay); Kim Dewar, Melanie Jones, Jennifer Queen (Canterbury); Margaret Hesketh (Wellington); Gail Jonson (Waikato); Megan Tohill (Otago).

No men have qualified yet for backstroke events at Brisbane, but three have been included in the camp — Gillard, Kingsman and Taumaunu.

Kingsman, at 14, has been the success story of the season, but if any swimmer is to reach the qualifying time of a minute flat in the 109 m and 2min 10.2 s in the 200 m, Taumaunu looks the likely one: Illness early in the year left him below peak fitness at the national championships in Hamilton last month, but with two months of hard training behind him he could be ready to reach the 200 m time at Hamilton. His best time for the distance is just 0.5 s short off the target. O’Donoghue and Miss Croad in the 100 m freestyle,

and Salisbury and Miss Jonson in the 200 m medley, are -all within a second of the qualifying times. A second camp for New Zealand’s top age-group swimmers will be run at Dunedin during the same period. These swimmers will be under the wing of the Otago coach, Duncan Laing.

They are: Boys: Stefan Mac Fie (Waikato); . Frazer Brown (Hakwes Bay); Kirk Torrance, Kane Inornate, Darryn Bluett, Bean Foster (Auckland); Andrew Smith, Alistair Park (Otago); Jeremy Perrott (Wellington); Craig Jones (Southland). Girls: Lisa Hartshorne (Wanganui); Tracy Sanders, Tanya Boon, Keerylynne Torrance, Sylvia Hume (Auckland); Lisa Chamberlain, Kirstein Mclntosh (Canterbury); Myra Snell (Waikatio); Amanda Hay (Hawkes Bay); Sarah Morris (Manawatu); Nicola Chambers (Otego); Anna Doig (Wellington).

The 22 swimmers are aged between 13 and 16 and are considerd to have excellent potential.
