Lone Hand strongly favoured

Special correspondent Wellington The combination of the Woodville trainer, Noel Eales, and the Matamata rider, Bruce Compton, has reaped success on numerous occasions over recent seasons and they could again combine for success with Lone Hand in the Caltex Dealers Handicap, first leg of the TAB. double at the Otaki-Maori Racing Club’s meeting at Otaki today.

The race is not brimming over with talent however, and there is plenty of scope for an upset. This couki come in the form of Heine Rose. She was bogged down by the Tauherenikau mud at her last start but had performed reasonably well beforehand. She tends to drift well off the pace in her races but if kept a little handier today could prove hard to beat. Buckcharmer was impressive winning a highweight at Feilding over Easter. That win came after good form at Nelson late in March and with Jim Cassidy in the saddle his chances should not be overlooked. Tailifer is an in arid out sort but capable on his day.

He won well on the first day at Tauherenikau then failed in the Hawkes Bay Cup last Saturday. Garry Phillips rides him. Hagenblu, Brazen Princess, Isle A Gree and Novel Time appeal most of the remainder. With the probable favourite, Langtry a doubtful starter in the Taipua Handicap, the second leg, the Foxton mare Diplomante looks to have a good winning chance. Diplomante has been a trifle disappointing in her recent starts but the field she is up against today is mediocre. Garry Phillips will ride her and from seven at the 1600 m start she should prove too classy for her rivals.

The speedy entire, Smart Fella, with only 48kg must be some chance as could the capable Pacific Pride. She seldom runs two races alike but has a powerful finish that could be shown to advantage in the Otaki straight.
