Foster care

Sir,—After the report by the Department of Social Welfare research unit it seemed that fostering has reached an alltime low. While I accept the dismal picture painted by the research, I draw attention to .the fact that this was only 654 children out of 7000 in care. Some foster parents have had children for many years, right into adulthood. Many are “foster grandparents.” The kind of results published in this report provide the reason for the birth of fostercare associations throughout the country. We work closely with the department to reverse the kind of trends shown in the research. Fostering is an unpaid, 24-hours-a-day commitment to disturbed children who need care and support. The community, with the department and the association, must accept responsibility for its children. — Yours, etc., ANNE-MARIE PIKE, . Chairperson, Christchurch Foster Care Association.
