Baton row in Q’land
NZPA Brisbane The Queensland Opposition and civil liberties representatives yesterday voiced strong protests against the proposed use of special police batons at the Commonwealth Games. The Queensland Police Minister (Mr Russ Hinze) said that the state’s police force was free to make its own decision on whether to
buy the American-made metre-long batons. The row broke out after the Queensland Police Union’s president Col Chant, supported a call from the Australian Police Federation for the introduction in Australia of the crowd-control batons. The batons were used by the New Zealand police during the Springbok tour. Sergeant Chant said the union would ask Police Com-
missioner Terry Lewis for approval to buy the batons and train special squads in their use. The Queensland Opposition police spokesman, Bob Gibbs yesterday accused Sergeant Chant of deliberately fostering fear and confrontation. “It is a pity he does not spend some of his time looking for a solution to the wave of murder, rape and armed robbery which is presently sweeping this state,” he said.
