Church society’s new head
A Shirley woman has been appointed to a leading position in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Christchurch.
Mrs Lesley Smith is the new president of the church’s Relief Society and will have the responsibility of administrating the society in the Christchurch Stake (diocese), which extends from Timaru to Kaikoura and includes Greymouth and Hokitika. The society was founded in 1842 and has more than 1.5 million members in 70 countries.
Members of the Relief Society, which includes all female church members over 18, placed importance on education and self improvement, said Mrs Smith. Mrs Smith succeeds Mrs Raylee Giles, who had been president for 3% years.
