Aust. optimism over C.E.R.

Wellington reporter

The Australian Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Anthony) arrived in New Zealand late last evening hopeful that today’s talks on closer economic relations between New Zealand and Australia will enable an agreement to come into force at the beginning of next year.

“I hope to be able to go back to Australia saying that I believe we are within reach of achieving C.E.R. because I believe its is imperative for the long-term benefit of both countries that we open up trade,” he said in an airport interview just after mid--night. ,

Mr Anthony said he believed, there was a good

chance of making progress in today’s talks. He agreed’ that import licensing and export incentives were “important issues” still outstanding. He said, however, that he felt both countries would address themselves to. these problems. Asked if he thought the January 1 starting date could still be achieved Mr Anthony said: “I would hope so.” He said that he, “might make suggestions” to the New Zealand Government about problems with the Brisbane Commonwealth Games and the threats of a black African boycott. “It would be very hard to come across here without having some discussion about,” he said.
