Piggott excels
NZPA-Reuter Paris The champion British jockey, Lester Piggott, was at his masterly best when riding Stavros Niarchos’s Persepolis to a two-length victory in the Prix Noailles at Longchamp on Sunday. Persepolis, near the back coming into the straight and behind a wall of horses, dashed to the head when a gap opened on the rails inside the final furlong to win from Beau Pretender and Rienzi. The trainer, Francois Boutin, said Persepolis' next run would be in the group one Prix Lupin in a month’s time. Sharp Singer, which had only been in serious training for the last 10 days, was another impressive winner. He dominated his rivals in the Prix de Guiche, which he won by a length from .What A Guest.
Jointly owned by a coindealer, Mr Bruce McNall, and the oil millionaire, Mr Nelson Bunker Hunt, Sharp Singer will turn out again in the Prix Lupin where he could again meet What A Guest.
Sharp Singer was one of the last into the straight but he then made steady progress up the middle of the course to take the lead with 280 metres to run.
