Two young girl wrestlers from the Rangiora Amateur Wrestling Club, Kirsten McLaughlan (left) and Tania Ford, both aged eight, at a practice last evening. The girls participated in a demonstration at the Canterbury championships in Rangiora on Sunday, which gave them a rare opportunity to display their skills. Girls are not eligible to compete in amateur wrestling. Although the demonstration organisers doubt whether the rule against girls entering competition will change, they are encouraging more young girls to take 1 up the sport.
