This plaque has been erected at the Timaru Airport in memory of Richard Pearse, the first man to fly in New Zealand, and some claim, in the world. The South Canterbury Committee of the Timaru Airport Authority has recommended that the airport be called the Richard Pearse Airport to commemorate Pearse’s flight at nearby Waitohi.
