The Minister of Justice (Mr McLay) recently announced that the Justice Department and the Institute of Criminology University would jointly undertake a three-party study on rape. It will study the rape laws, police and court procedures, and the treatment of rape victims.
“Rape is causing widespread public concern,” Mr McLay said. “Anyone following the news must have got the impressjon that in recent times the number of rapes has increased, and for once the news media has got its facts jright.”
Today, KARREN BEANLAND backgrounds the subject of rape and the mythology that surrounds the crime. Tomorrow, in the final article, she will look at New Zealand’s rape laws.
