Waimakariri pollution

Sir,—l agree with Peter Osborne. We have been listening for years to excuses on the • pollution of the. Waimakariri, and the tithe has I 'arrived to’get on with the jpb and. clean it up: Oh the hotter' days of this summer, hundreds of. people were ,bathing between the-two bridges,, in spite of warnings not to do so, and hundreds more were at Kairaki-, Stewarts Gully, and the- Kaiapoi Mouth, fishing or bathing. I have recently seen the bottom of the south branch littered with dead trout arid eels.. The Waimakariri would wash its dead out to sea, -and out of sight. As Peter Osborne points put, changing. the pipe outlet <• will do nothing? for the Waimakariri. Industry-turns this crys-tal-clear river into a sewer in its-last two or three miles. So industry, with' Government or local body . assistance, should clean it up.—Yours, etc., M. D. McNEILL. April 16,, 1982.
