Canty too strong in squash match
Canterbury had too much depth for Southern Districts in the annual squash match for the Viv Hargreaves Shield played at Timaru yesterday. After the morning matches Canterbury was ahead by 27 matches to nine, and in spite of several fine wins by the Southern under-23 men’s team in the reverse singles, was the winner by 54 matches to 18. Rod. Hayes, fresh from his European tour, cruised through his two matches while lower down Mark Crosbie also showed the benefit of his international play with the New Zealand junior side. Crosbie was sharp at the front of the court and his keenness to volley kept his opponents under constant pressure. Craig Hibbert had two sound wins and appears to have almost fully recovered from his injury. Robbie Burnett, another to win both matches, showed more control of his serve and drove to an excellent length. The Canterbury women encountered surprisingly determined retrieving by 'Southern. Kathy Hargreaves used her experience to ease out Freda Walker and Czesia Bowan, and Jacqui James produced controlled squash to be undefeated. - Other double winners were Joanne Milne, Susan Wasley and Lorraine Sutherland.
