No cost cuts for Wildlife Service
PA Wellington The Wildlife Service has escaped any cuts during the Government's 3 per cent cost pruning exercise, according to the Undersecretary of Internal Affairs (Mr Thompson). “We think Wildlife’s work is so important it has escaped a cut although over all the Internal Affairs Depart-
ment has more than met its target." said Mr Thompson. A report that the service would bo forced to abandon some projects this year gave an incorrect picture of the service’s activities, he said. "People reading that might think the Wildlife Service is winding down its activities. The truth is it is doing so much it is stretched
to the limit. It is transferring more birds than ever, as part of its management programme for endangered species. “It is managing an increasing number of habitats and later this year it will launch its 'Wanted Alive’ campaign to publicise the plight of Ne>v Zealand wildlife.”
