Heavy loss for Gisborne City
PA Wellington Gisborne City equalled its heaviest Rothmans Soccer League defeat when it was beaten. 5-0, by Mt Wellington in Auckland yesterday. It was Mt Wellington’s second five-goal win over Gisborne. The first was in 1974, Gisborne also suffered a five-goal deficit against Christchurch United the following season. Hanimex North Shore beat National Mutual Miramar. 2-1, to stay on top of the table, a clear point away from Mt Wellington, the 1980 champion. The title-holder, Wellington Diamond United, was held to a 1-1 draw at home, by Christchurch Mogal United. On Saturday. Dunedin City and Manurewa drew. 1-1. in Auckland after both sides had been goalless at half-time. In the Auckland matches, Mt Wellington went on the rampage at Bill McKinlay Park, and Hanimex North Shore came from behind to beat National Mutual
Miramar, 2-1, to maintain its seven-match-long unbeaten run. Both matches had their share of incidents. A New Zealand World Cup player, Grant Turner (Gisborne), was.sent off late in the match after having received his second booking from the referee. Gary Fleet, and the Shore captain. Adrian Elrick, finished the match in some pain after having crashed to the ground and being left with an injured shoulder, which later required hospital treatment. The early indications were that Elrick. who is also a key figure in New Zealand's World Cup plans, may be out of action for six weeks.’ In Napier, two solo goals by Hamilton City's Gary Fleming allowed Hamilton to take a point from Napier City Rovers when they drew, 2-2. In Invercargill, the home side. Southland Savings Bank Thistle, had a 2-1 win over Kenwood East. Coast Bays.
