Veterans’ run short of record
Ray Green (pictured right) hands the running over to Barry Carpenter in an attempt on the world veteran 100 x one mile relay by Canterbury veteran runners at Queen Elizabeth II Park yesterday. They missed the record by llmin. The last runner crossed the finishing line at 5.30 p.m. for a total time of 8h 56min 19s. The world record, which is held by the English Veterans’ Club, stands at 8h 45min 21s. The president of the Canterbury Veteran Athletes’ Club, Jim Macdonald, said after the run: “We are already planning to have another try next summer.” He said that the run had been a great success, in spite of having failed to break the record. Macdonald ran the fastest leg of the relay, in 4min 345. Other fast times were recorded by Vic Sykes (4min 425) and Dave Neil) (4min 435). The organisers had aimed for a mile pace of smin 15.25, but the actual rate averaged out at smin 21s for the 100 runners. Two runners aged more than 60, Barry Evans (smin 435) and Eric Jackson (smin 455), and five women took part. The fastest woman was Margaret Walker, who ran her section in smin Bs.
