Smithfield market
Reduced wholesale activity for New Zealand lamb on the United Kingdom market was accompanied by an easing in prices, the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board reports in its weekly market survey. New Zealand lamb continued to become more attractive in price compared with domestic lamb and beef, but is still under pressure from poultry and pork. On the Smithfield market PL grade New Zealand lamb was quoted at 64.8-67 p per lb and PM grade at 65-66.5 p per lb. The first new season English lamb was quoted at 102-115 p per lb. depending on carcase weight. The United States imported beef market was dull last week, with New Zealand manufacturing beef traded at similar prices to the previous week. Boneless cow beef was quoted at 102-103 US cents per lb. c.i.f., and bull at 108109 US cents per lb. A strong demand for New Zealand prime cuts has developed in the United Kingdom as a result of the sanctions on Argentina — traditionally the largest nonE.E.C. supplier of beef to the United Kingdom. Demand for New Zealand mutton in Japan has improved with several sales of
MLI and MM grades reported at prices in the range of 59-60.5 US cents per lb. However. activity was mainl.v confined to small parcel’s of privately-owned stocks. The board continues to quote 62.0 US cents per lb, c. and f., for MLI grade.
